The 49ers’ biggest concern for the next season isn’t their quarterback position.
Quarterback is what we all want to talk about. It’s the sexy position. But Jimmy Garoppolo is a viable quarterback if he’s healthy and the 49ers can win with him. And almost certainly they’ll draw a quarterback too. That’s why they should upgrade their quarterback space this off-season.
The 49ers’ biggest concern isn’t cornerback either, though almost all of their corners will be free agents. The 49ers know they need corners and they will get some. You are well aware of the situation in secondary education.
And almost certainly they will get a new center as well. Plus a guard. The 49ers understand that they have weaknesses in these areas and will certainly address them.
But there’s one point the 49ers don’t know they need to address. A point they deny.
Not only did head coach Kyle Shanahan say Mike McGlinchey will return as a starting player next season, Shanahan said the 49ers would tackle McGlinchey’s option for the fifth year and redraw him with the ninth election if they got the chance .
McGlinchey was arguably the worst real machine in the NFL last season. He weighed less than 290 pounds and was tossed around in the sea like a child. He couldn’t stand up to NFL performance nor keep up with NFL pace. It was a hologram. An illusion.
And he’s coming back next season, apparently. So whoever is playing quarterback – good luck.
