The Auberge Resorts Collection, the award-winning portfolio of unique luxury hotels, resorts and residences, announced today that it will manage the Hearst Hotel, the Auberge Resorts Collection, a piece of history in the heart of San Francisco. The downtown property is part of the Auberge Resorts Collection’s ongoing strategic expansion into the downtown area and its commitment to the long-term vibrancy and culture of downtown San Francisco. The Hearst-owned building, a 1911 landmark being redeveloped by leading San Francisco real estate investment and development firm JMA Ventures, is reborn as The Hearst Hotel, Auberge Resorts Collection. Set in this iconic building with more than a century of fascinating stories, the hotel will redefine luxury and inspire a new experience in the City by the Bay when it opens in 2023.

The Hearst Hotel is ideally located at the intersection of Market Street and Third Street, where its newfound vibrancy and contemporary hospitality create a dynamic social hub that attracts travelers and locals alike. The unique blend of tradition and innovation will reflect the dramatic narrative and changing fortunes of San Francisco. The neighborhood in which it is located has long been known for its architectural grandeur and historical significance, as well as a contemporary mix of shopping, business and award-winning dining experiences.

The Hearst Building was built in 1911 and housed the San Francisco Examiner until the 1960s. It features a Spanish Revival-style construction, Tennessee Pink marble on the lower floors, and a terracotta facade that extends to the roof parapet. In 1938 the famous architect Julia Morgan von Hearst was commissioned to complete the entrance area, the facade with 20 cast bronze medallions of imaginative animals and a striking coat of arms above the front entrance as well as other remarkable architectural details. Morgan, who was born in the Bay Area and was Hearst’s lead architect for the design of Hearst Castle, was a pioneer in her field. She was the first woman to receive the American Institute of Architects’ highest award, the AIA Gold Medal, and she continues to inspire the work to this day.

After a major renovation and redesign of the interior, the 13-story listed building will be known as The Hearst Hotel, Auberge Resorts Collection, a 150-room hotel, an Auberge Spa, a large lobby, social spaces, a destination restaurant and a rooftop bar having a hotel opens up a unique perspective of the city. There are 14 suites among the accommodations.

The hotel is conceived and designed by Roman and Williams – the renowned design team behind Nantuckets Greydon House, the Chicago Athletic Association, the RW Guild, La Mercerie and Le Coucou in New York – and reflects a relaxed, eclectic life on the west coast at Hearsts Interest in European design. Strong classic lines, textured palazzo floors, eclectic furniture and architectural elements inspired by Hearst’s antiques collection will define the style of the Hearst Hotel. Roman and Williams will honor the iconic architecture of the building while bringing this extraordinary hotel to life for the next generation of world travelers.

“Auberge has mastered the art of creating new life in historic buildings, preserving their unique character and at the same time providing them with the contemporary comfort and experiences that are relevant for today’s discerning traveler,” said Dan Friedkin, Chairman of the Auberge Resorts Collection. “As we continue to expand our portfolio, we are delighted to be working with JMA Ventures to bring the unique Hearst Hotel experience to the dynamic city of San Francisco.”

“Our hotels feel like a beautifully designed home inspired by this location,” added Craig Reid, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Auberge Resorts Collection. “The Hearst Hotel will be a home away from home that will immerse guests in the traditions and rich culture of San Francisco. It will raise the bar for luxury in the city and create a new hangout for the city’s locals. “

“JMA Ventures is excited to partner with the Auberge Resorts Collection, whose award-winning reputation sets the standard for luxury hospitality,” said Todd Chapman, CEO of JMA Ventures. “The future-oriented vision of the Auberge Resorts Collection complements the legacy of the building and forms a beautiful conceptual framework for a modern hotel.”

In 2020, the Auberge Resorts opened the Commodore Perry Estate, the Auberge Resorts Collection in Austin and Mauna Lani, and the Auberge Resorts Collection in Hawaii. This year the brand will open six hotels including: Bishop’s Lodge, Auberge Resorts Collection in Santa Fe, New Mexico, The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern, Auberge Resorts Collection in Los Olivos, California, Stanly Ranch, Auberge Resorts Collection in Napa Valley, California., Etéreo, Auberge Resorts Collection on the Riviera Maya, Mexico, Hacienda AltaGracia, Auberge Resorts Collection in Costa Rica and Susurros del Corazón, Auberge Resorts Collection in Punta de Mita, Mexico.
