Enjoy Dallas this week

offers a taste of Big D.

One thing is beyond dispute about Dallas: it has fabulous food. Enjoy Dallas at Savor Dallas, a series of events from Thursday through March 17, featuring food by 60+ chefs and 400+ wines, spirits and beers.

New this year is a Thursday night tasting at the new Trinity Groves restaurant at the west end of Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge. The wine walk on Friday evening takes place in the new Perot Museum of Science and Nature. Wine and cheese tastings will be held on Saturday along with the International Grand Tasting at the Irving Convention Center. Enjoy another Sunday wine walking tour at the Dallas Arboretum.

Events are different prices. Find out more and buy tickets at

High notes for San Francisco Jazz and Rrazz

On my last visit to San Francisco, the music scene jumped over the moon, largely due to the opening of the new SFJazz Center on Franklin Street and Fell Street near the Symphony Center.

The Fall San Francisco Jazz Festival now has its own home and there is a special place for jazz musicians to keep us entertained year-round. SFJazz Collective, the center-based ensemble, performs throughout the month. Other spring events include guitarist Bill Frisell, who presents the world premiere of Hunter S. Thompson’s “The Kentucky Derby,” in which Tim Robbins reads the Gonzo journalist’s coverage of the 1970 race to Frisell’s score. Oh that I could be there

It’s not nearly as important as the opening of SFJazz, but on a smaller stage, those of us who enjoy cabaret-style entertainment were thrilled to hear that the Rrazz room, ejected from Hotel Nikko, has a new home A former Cadillac dealership on Van Ness Ave. 1000. The AMC cinemas are located in this block-long, seven-story structure (and will remain so).

The Rrazz has settled in a theater at the top of an ornate wooden staircase and now offers food and drinks. Jefferson Airplane opened the new space. (Paul Kanter still lives in North Beach and is at Caffe Trieste.)

Patti LuPone will play at Rrazz from March 19th to March 24th. Please visit for more information.

Look at you real and surreal

at San Antonio McNay

While in San Antonio recently, I visited the McNay Art Museum to see the visiting exhibition “Real / Surreal: Selections from the Whitney Museum of American Art”. I recommend you see it too before it ends on May 19th.

These paintings, prints, drawings and photos by Edward Hopper, Andrew Wyeth, Man Ray, Paul Cadmus, Philip Guston, and others made me smile on a rainy day.

Keep in mind that the museum now has an adult entry fee of $ 15 ($ 10 for students and seniors; children 12 and under are free). It’s at 6000 N. New Braunfels Ave., on the Austin Highway. More information is available at
