I moved to San Francisco about six years ago – right at the beginning of the current startup boom.
Much has changed in the city in those six years, creating tension between longtime San Francisco residents and the tech industry.
These tensions stem from the San Francisco Bay Area real estate crisis, where people put ridiculous efforts to find affordable housing, including switching to boats, vans, and even cardboard boxes.
The thing is, San Francisco’s housing shortage was here before the tech industry took off here, and they will be here even if the tech industry collapses. And you can trace them back to decisions made in the 1950s and 1960s.
