SAN FRANCISCO, CA – A man from Livermore was arrested early Thursday morning in connection with sexual assault at a bus stop in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco, police said.
Fidel Padilla, 41, was taken into custody for hours after witnesses reported a gruesome scene on Wednesday night. Padilla was arrested on suspicion of rape of an unconscious person, prison records show.
Officials from the San Francisco Police Department with Tenderloin Station came to a bus stop on the 900 block of Market Street around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday after several people reported that a man in his forties in dark clothes raped an unconscious woman at the bus stop . A person on a passing bus yelled at him to stop, then people got off the bus to help the woman, police said.
She was hospitalized for unspecified injuries.
Police received video surveillance images of the suspect and discovered Padilla around 1 a.m. on Thursday morning in the 300 block of Golden Gate Avenue, police said. He was identified as a suspect and arrested, and then sent to San Francisco County Jail, police said.
