Lashing winds hit power lines in the Bay Area Monday evening through Tuesday morning, sending thousands into the darkness.

According to PG&E, 53,029 customers were without power at 7:30 a.m. This includes 1,746 customers in San Francisco,
23,232 in East Bay, 6,322 in the Peninsula, 17,865 in East Bay and 3,864 in North Bay, according to PG & spokesman JD Guidi.

“Our crews will continue working as safely and quickly as possible until all customers are restored,” said Guidi, who was unable to specify a specific time for the power supply to be switched on again.

The utility company advised people to stay away from broken power lines. “Assuming it is live and extremely dangerous,” warned the utility in a message on Twitter. “Do not touch or try to move it – and keep children and animals away. Report any failed power lines immediately by calling either 911 or PG&E at 1-800-743-5002.”

Violent offshore winds hit mountain peaks from Monday evening through Tuesday morning and mixed into valleys in the San Francisco Bay Area, with the strongest gusts in the North Bay reaching over 150 km / h.

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for altitudes above 1,000 feet in the San Francisco Bay Area by 7:00 a.m. Tuesday. A wind report was issued for the North Bay, East Bay, San Francisco, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz by 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

The highest wind speeds as of 1 a.m. on Tuesday included a 97 mph gust at the PG&E geothermal display from Santa Fe in Sonoma, 95 mph in Lake County, 84 mph on Mount Diablo in the East Bay and 78 miles per hour on Mount Umunhum in the South Bay.

A gust of 54 miles per hour was recorded in San Francisco.
