While the focus of the 49ers in the 2021 NFL draft was Round 1 and choosing a quarterback, we should make bolder predictions as well.

The prediction that the San Francisco 49ers will take on a number 3 quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft is not so brave. It’s almost a guarantee in every way, but only official.

The Niners, who own nine picks in this year’s draft, rose from 12th overall to make a quarterbacking pick. And while there’s no shortage of speculation as to which signal caller San Francisco will pick up at this point, keep in mind that there are eight other tips and many other needs that head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch will have to address later in the draft.

So while Round 1 is going to get most of the attention, it could be argued that the real part of the 49ers’ effort will start with their second choice.

Prediction pieces are always fun at this time of year anyway. So let’s offer five bold predictions for the Niners over the three-day period of the draft.

49ers Prediction # 1: Justin Fields is the 3rd pick overall

Well, maybe it’s not that brave. But considering some NFL draft pundits like ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. say Alabama quarterback Mac Jones is “locked up” in San Francisco with third overall win:

Kiper has its credibility, that has to be taken into account.

But let’s make our own bold statement here, and say that Ohio state quarterback Justin Fields, not Jones, is the 49ers’ top pick in the NFL draft instead.

Fields has a far higher cap than Jones, and few would effectively argue that point. While Jones is a more NFL capable player and has the higher floor, the Niners didn’t trade nine places and gave up three additional award-winning draft picks to be conservative with their top picks.

Frankly, if San Francisco is going to be brave with the trade-up, it could be brave with the choices too.

There’s nothing overly bold about Jones, sorry. Fields is a far bolder statement, however, and will be the 3rd pick overall.
